Inspiration for the TourSites Platform

While there is no shortage of digital experience options for cultural heritage institutions, the number of realistic options for today’s small- and medium-sized institutions is unfortunately slim, and museums of all sizes still struggle to deliver engaging mobile experiences. Many organizations can’t afford to use commercial vendors, which typically use proprietary systems with limited ability to deliver robust content, and most lack the technical expertise to create their own solutions.

Recognizing these limitations, the TourSites team set out to create a digital platform that is:

  • Free and open source
  • Responsive in design for desktop and mobile
  • Integrated with WordPress
  • Able to deliver rich media content from a variety of sources
  • Flexible enough for a wide variety of use cases

The platform currently exists as a working “Alpha” prototype.  It was created by the Ohio History Connection in partnership with the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities, and was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

At this time, the Project Team is working to obtain funding for a second round of development that will create a full-functioning, public release. Some organizations have already begun using the Alpha platform, so feel free to contact us if you would like more information about using TourSites for your next project.
